“You talk about yourself like you killed somebody.”
You Talk About Yourself Like You Killed Somebody is an ongoing photographic project about self-erasure as a subconscious response to a traumatic past. Titled after my roommate's observation of my tendency to refer to my younger self as separate from the person I am now, this series stages my own murder. In this conceptual scenario, I play both victim and killer, exploring this separation of self I’ve created as a means to cope with pain difficult to accept as reality. This work is an attempt to look beneath the surface of what I had mistaken for healing, and to reckon with who I was, what happened to her, and who I am becoming as I work to reintegrate self.
