Almosts
+ Almost Home
For a time after moving to Cincinnati, I felt caught between belonging. I'd round a street corner and catch a glimpse of Kentucky, or occasionally the lamplight at a local coffee shop would start to look like sitting in a close friends car with the driver's side door ajar. These moments became my "almost homes." I found that the longer I lived here, the more I gravitated towards these spaces with the car door lighting and Kentucky corners, in-between spots that felt like home, both here and there.
This body of work brings a younger version of me into these almost homes, both of us now experiencing the world around us for the first time in much the same way.
Almosts visualizes the discomfort that accompanies the word “almost.” In this series I picture potential, posing as stored or untapped energy. I aim to capture that tip-of-the-tongue feeling, the face that couldn’t be remembered, the “came close.” I’m interested in the movement of a memory, the “what could’ve been’s,” or spaces that are “almost” familiar but unidentifiable. Reaching, remembering, and regret are major themes within this work transforming each frame into a “what-if” statement.
